Welcome Message

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of SIOP Africa and Uganda Cancer Institute, it gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the14th SIOP Africa Continental Congress which will take place at Serena Hotel, Kampala-Uganda, from 16th to 18th March 2022.

The Congress theme, “Innovate for Africa” invites us to share innovations in delivering cancer care despite unique challenges we face in our respective contexts. An exciting programme of exceptional speakers and symposium topics has been prepared by the Scientific Committee. Leaders in fields like targeted therapy, ethics, adapted treatment regimens, advocacy/access, and childhood cancer care in exceptional circumstances among others will speak to us. This year, the pre-congress workshop is on a topic that has long been desired: Adapted Treatment Regimens (ATRs).

In collaboration with our partners St Children’s Research Hospital, a hybrid format will be deployed to deliver the congress though the main thrust will be the in-person platform because it will foster delivery on the unique needs of our membership. We expect that Covid-19-related restrictions will be abated by then to allow for travel. Stringent measures have been put in place to ensure safety of all delegates; you can find more information on these on the website under the tab on Covid-19 information. To engage delegates who may not be able to travel to Uganda high impact sessions will be streamed virtually. Importantly, should there be insurmountable obstacles, we are well prepared to pivot to a virtual-only format so, SIOP Africa 2022 will take place no matter what!

Let us accelerate efforts to improve childhood cancer survival for children and young people in Africa. No child should die of cancer: cure for all care for more!

See you at SIOP Africa 2022!

Dr Joyce Balagadde Kambugu
